SMART Team/Autism Evaluation
Timely evaluation for children with a potential diagnosis of austism spectrum disorder is challenging and at times overwhelming. Waiting lists for these evaluations are long and families are asked to provide a myriad of information. The SMART team, formed as part of the Lewis County Autism Coalition, was started to address this very issue. The SMART team meets monthly at Northwest Pedicatric Center in Centralia and consists of professionals from various fields including medical, early intervention, school, OT and speech. When your child is referred to the SMART team, the team evaluates information from all areas of your child’s experience including school, daycare, early intervention, speech, OT, and from the patient’s medical provider. The team, which includes a neurodevelopmentalist, then evaluates the information and can make recommendations about the next best steps to support you and your child’s success in school and life. If a child needs further evaluation for possible autism spectrum disorder, the SMART team neurodevelopmentalist will see that child in a timely manner, avoiding the traditional long wait times to get an autism evaluation.
